I just started this program and was just curious if you recomend any certain size or grade of a hill.

It really depends a lot on what you have in your area to use. If you get to the top of the hill and its easy than your not going to get much out of it. The hill that we do most of our training on is 40-45 degrees roughly. It’s not a real big hill, its just one of the better ones in our area. The hill that you pick, should challenge you and shouldn’t feel like it was easy when you get to the top. The bigger the hill the harder it will be so keep that in mind. Depending on your fitness level, you might not be able to make it to the top. That’s ok, you can build up to it. I would start with a hill that you can at least jog up, and see how hard it is. If it is too easy, look for a steeper side or bigger hill. If you don’t have access to a ton of hills, we can change the volume or intensity to make the hill you are using work for you. Let me know how it goes after a week or two, and if you have anymore questions just ask. Thanks Josh!

Well tonight was my first 3 mile. It may not seem far for some people but I have never ran anything over 2. Im in decent shape. I have been powerlifting for about 3 years now but I never run. I made it in 32 mins which is nothing special but I think for a 6’4 260lb guy that never runs I’m doing ok haha. The next 12 weeks are going to kick my butt.

Hey Josh Thanks for posting. We have a lot of members that have never run before or were just like you. After the 12 weeks, 3 miles will not be bad at all. Just keep pushing through the training. If you need to walk at all to complete your mileage or hill training that is fine. It still helps train the muscles. Cheers

What if you live in a flat area without hills is it ok to use a treadmill inclined?

    • Fitness Dojo

Yes you can use a treadmill. The important thing is to make sure that it is challenging and we can simulate as close to a real hill as possible. Depending on the fitness level you are starting at, what level incline to use on the treadmill. You want the incline to be challenging but make sure that you can run at whatever level it is set at. On advantage to the treadmill is that we can run for as long as we want. So while the incline may or may not be as hard as a hill outside, it can be as long as we need it to be. If you are starting at level one and working towards 5, 3 minute rounds pick a incline and speed that is challenging but you can do. If it is too steep or too fast and you can’t run them make sure to adjust so that you can. You can always increase as you get stronger. Keep an eye out, I’ll post some good treadmill workouts that will challenge you.
